I suffered a pretty major downtime following a software upgrade (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS beta 1).

I turned out to be a hardware issue; one of the drive of the RAID array is faulty, so much so that the PC refuses to boot when it happens. And as I have no physical access to the machine, I couldn’t diagnostic what was happening.

Thanks to IPMI (what a cool technology), I was provided with a serial console access to the machine and could track what the problem was exactly.

New drive has been ordered... Hopefully the server will stay up this time...
